Reading Level: Grades 9 and Up
Reader’s Annotation:
Teen vogue covers the latest hairstyles, shoes, dresses, and hairstyling tips to keep teen girls in the loop and at the height of fashion and popular culture.
Summary:
Teen Vogue, the younger sister to the adult Vogue magazine, offers what most would expect by its title – fashion advice for teens, the latest fashionable clothes and where to find them, and beauty tips and techniques. Some information in the magazine also focuses on major events in the lives of teens, such as prom and what dresses to look out for. The writers take the magazine a step further, however, by covering the latest in teen pop culture, celebrity news and gossip, and offering more thoughtful articles on mental health and body image. Other articles also focus on how to score internships in a variety of fields, or contain interviews with successful young adults who are making a difference in the world. Other articles cover the latest news and images from upcoming Hunger Games movies, for example, or talk about teen pregnancy.
Critical Evaluation:
Teen Vogue is impressive in its coverage, especially in staying on top of important teen milestones such as prom and providing in depth articles about them. There’s been something of a revolt against rail-thin models in the media lately, especially with fiery articles attacking bloggers about calling certain cheerleaders “chunky” despite being relatively thin (http://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/health-fitness/blogger-attacked-for-fat-cheerleader-post/story-fneuzle5-1226631212841). It is a smart idea on Teen Vogue’s part, therefore, to develop articles about mental well-being and body image – not only to help teen girls feel better about who they are, but to make sure they still can produce magazines. The magazine is also notable for developing thorough, detailed articles that are still fairly terse, getting to the point with minimal fluff. Overall, though Teen Vogue has a focus on fashion, it acts more like a variety magazine with its coverage of pop culture and celebrity news. As a result, many girls are likely to enjoy picking up the latest issue for its host of entertaining and informative articles.

It’s more serious articles, such as those focusing on career matters, are also of great use and demonstrate there is a bit more depth to the magazine.
